2011 Alumni Tournament

Once again, the Yellow Springs Alumni Tournament did not disappoint with the final two games going into overtime.  The semi-final, 92 and Before versus 02-03 had a match up that went back in forth with no team gaining a clear edge.  The returning champs from last year were no match for the veterans, even though Paul Hull hit 4 three pointers for 12 points, Brent Robinson with 13, John Cowen with 15 , and Matt Wallace leading the way for 02-03 with 16 points.  They had two players foul out, as the vets took control of the game in overtime with Brad Newsome leading the way with 25 points, Carey Cordell 20, and Jason Shea with 13.

But in the second game, 92 and Before didn't have enough stamina to match against the class of 09-11.  This game had the vets take an early lead, only to see it fade away thanks to the play of Ryan Newsome who led the team with 24 points and 6 three pointers.  The class of 10-11 outlasted the vets to take the win.  The class of 92 and Before were led by Carey Cordell with 23 points.

Classes of ‘02–03 win tournament

The Yellow Springs High School Classes of 2002–03 won the championship game of the annual alumni men’s basketball tournament held over New Year’s weekend.

The Classes of 2002–03 won the title with a 67–53 victory over their elders from the Classes of 1992–95 on Dec. 31. The members of the winning team were Brent Robinson, Andrew Richlen, Jeff Demmings, Paul Hull, Emmett Todd and Joe Martin.

On the first day of the tournament, Dec. 30, the Classes of 1992–95 beat the classes of 1984–86, 63–49, and then defeated the Classes of 1987–91, 77–64. The Classes of 2004–05 beat the Classes of 1996–98, 53–44, but then lost 79–55 to the Classes of 2002–03.

The tournament winners will receive the alumni trophy at the YSHS boys varsity basketball game on Friday, Jan 6.

A Yellow Springs alumni all-star team of the top players from each team in the tournament will play another area alumni all-star team sometime in January. Members of the YSHS all-star team include Cody Johnson, Rory Hotaling, Vaughan Crandall, Jason Randolph, Carl Schumacher, Michael Taylor, Cary Cordell, Brent Robinson, Andrew Richlen, Joe Martin, Larry Peterson and James Stream. This is the first year the alumni team will compete against other area teams.

’84–86 win alumni tourney

Approximately 300 to 400 people came out to support the 2004 YSHS alumni men’s basketball tournament on Sunday and Monday, Dec. 26 and 27, at Yellow Springs High School. Basketball fans saw the team from the Classes of 1984–86 win the championship for the sixth time since 1994.

In the tournament finals, the ’84–86 team came back from a 31–17 deficit against the 1995–98 team at halftime, taking the lead with three minutes left and held on for a 61–57 victory. David Fogarty was the lead scorer for the ’84–86 team, which won the tournament three years in a row in 1994, 1995 and 1996, and then again in 1998 and 1999.

In the first game of the tournament on Sunday, the ’84–86 team easily defeated the team from ’88–94, 71–56. The team of ’95–98 had an easier time, winning by forfeit because their opponents, the Classes of 1999–2001, did not have enough players. The class of 1983 and earlier got a bye in the first round but were defeated by the ’84–86 squad, 45–33. In the last game of the day, the classes of 2002–03 topped the Class of 2004, 49–40.

Admission from the tournament raised enough money to buy several new practice uniforms for the YSHS boys basketball team.

2003 Alumni Champions

2001–02 Alumni Win Basketball Tournament

The Classes of 2001–02 won the 2003 YSHS Alumni Basketball Tournament last weekend, defeating the Classes of 1996–98, 62–56, in the championship game.

Jason Randolph and Andrew Pierce led the ’96–98 team with 14 points and 10 points, respectively. Their team led for most of the game until Michael Walker, who led all scores with 21 points, helped the ’01–02 squad come back. The ’01–02 team overcame ’96–98 with five minutes left and never looked back. Neal Perry had 9 points for the ’01–02 team.

The winning team will receive their awards at halftime of the YSHS boys varsity home game against Cedarville Saturday, Jan. 3.

Youth prevails at YSHS alumni basketball tourney
The Yellow Springs girls and boys basketball teams had the weekend off, but that didn’t stop nearly 200 people from braving ice, snow and freezing temperatures to huddle in the Yellow Springs High School gym for the championship game of the annual YSHS alumni basketball tournament. Spectators expecting competitive and exciting play were not disappointed — both the semifinal and championship games were decided in the last minutes of action.
In the championship game, the Classes of ’95–’97 defeated the Classes of ’98–’99, 47–41. Jason Randolph, a 1997 alumnus, led the victors with 18 points and seven rebounds. “Last year was a lot of fun, and we did pretty well, but we knew it would be more fun if we won,” Randolph said.
For the winning side Gene Jackson added 10 points, and Mike Childs and Adrian Benning scored 6 points and grabbed six boards apiece. The winners used tough defense and good free-throw shooting to put the game away with under a minute to go.
Prentice Tomas led the Classes of ’98–’99 with 14 points and 12 boards.
YSHS boys varsity head coach Brad Newsome played on the ’83–’86 team that lost in the semifinals. “This is my sixth year running this tournament,” Newsome said. “It just seems to get better every year. It’s a lot of fun for everybody involved, and it’s a great chance for alumni to show that they still care about the program.”
Participants each donated $10, and spectators paid $2 apiece to watch the tourney. According to Newsome, the money raised will go to purchase T-shirts for varsity players and equipment for the entire basketball program. “It doesn’t bring in a ton of money, but it’s still a great fundraiser because it brings so many people together. This year we expect to raise $600 or $700,” Newsome said.
Jason Ryder, a 1997 alumnus and tourney participant, echoed the coach’s sentiments. “I am out to show my support for YS basketball, and it’s a great chance to see a lot of people I haven’t seen in a while,” Ryder said. “The best part is seeing who can still play.”
Boys junior varsity coach Perry Williams said that the tournaments’ benefits go even deeper. “There is a lot of fellowship among former players on the court. It is a good time for the older guys who can still play, but it also very important for our younger players to see what it means to be part of this program,” he said.
Although the championship game drew the largest crowd of the weekend, Saturday’s two semifinal match-ups provided the most excitement of the tournament. The first semifinal was decided when the Class of ’82 and Earlier forward Carl Schumacher’s last-second shot clanged off the rim. Schumacher claimed he was fouled. The ’95–’97 alumni won the game 60–58.
The second semifinal looked to be decided at the end of overtime with the ’98–’99 alumni trailing Newsome’s ’83–’86 group by 3 with seconds left to go. But with two seconds left on the clock, ’98-’99 guard Jerrod Martin sank a 22-footer with two defenders in his face to send the game into a second extra frame. The younger team dominated the second overtime period. Tomas sank 7 of 11 free-throws in the final minute of play to send his team to the finals with a 74–65 win.
At the end of the night, trophies were handed out to the champions, and an all-tournament team was selected. The all-tournament team will receive medals at halftime of the varsity’s home game against Ridgeville, Friday, Jan. 3.
All-tournament team selections were: Jason Randolph, Vaughn Crandall, Mike Childs, Carrie Cordell, Mike Taylor, Tony Finn, David Mahle, Brian Crosswhite, Billy Pearson, Carl Schumacher, Prentice Tomas, and Jerrod Martin.
